Stuyvesant Speech & Debate

2017- 2018

We represent one of the most honorable organizations both nationally and at Stuyvesant. Our emphasis on public-speaking, self-expression and confidence isn't only aimed at training national competitors and finalists; it's aimed at training future leaders. This team represents a second family for every single one of us.

CONGRESS NOVICES -- Congress Meeting Summary

Hi everyone!

You'll be getting really nice, fancy emails soon, but for now, I'm sticking to safe Google mail.

To those who came to the meeting today, it was great meeting you, and I hope that you've learned something useful. I know the meeting was very fast paced, and there's a reason for that. We'll definitely have a lot of fun events, team dinners, christmas parties and really great things coming, but for now, we want to get you guys in shape. Most of the next two-three weeks will be very content based, and we'll ask you guys to practice a lot with us. But by the end of this year, trust me, your public speaking will have improved tremendously and your ability to explain complex ideas in very concise arguments will be incredible.

Congress really does teach you phenomenal life skills. You'll all go to an interview someday and you'll be asked to explain, in 3 minutes, why you're the best candidate for the job. And with the skills you'll earn while being on this team, you'll succeed.

Logistics first:

1) If you haven't done so yet, please visit

-- Bookmark the site. You won't regret it. There's an email archive I will update tonight and split into all of our different categories. Check it once every one or two days to verify if you've missed things.

-- Please sign up to the 2014-2015 Email list. Once you enter your information, you'll get an email asking you to confirm your membership. This is an important step. Please confirm.

-- I know the Contact Form is quite long, but all of that information is actually necessary for us to have and for you to submit if you want to compete. Please fill it out.

2) If you have a Facebook account, please join our Facebook Group. We post meeting announcements and lots of important info there.

Yes, we've only had one meeting. And Yes, the tournament is in two weeks. But even if you just go there to watch, the experience will teach you far more than any meeting or lesson can. Please sign up if you can go. We will do our best to get you ready for the tournament beforehand, and you will definitely know all the speech elements and round structure you need to understand what's going on around you, but the only way you'll get better is by practicing in a real round.

Meeting Summary:

-- There's actually a Congress 101 Textbook that explains pretty much everything we'll tell you throughout the course of this year. Yes, a textbook -- don't laugh. I know that extracurriculars are extremely different from classes, so don't ever expect us to assign mandatory reading because we won't. But I am attaching two documents that I think do a fantastic job of explaining what we tried to emphasize today and that give you a brief overview of what a Congress round is like. They're quite short. Read them for your own benefit, your own interest, and your own desire to understand this category and succeed in it. We'll definitely go over this information, but please get a head start if you have 20 minutes to spare.
