Stuyvesant Speech & Debate

2017- 2018

We represent one of the most honorable organizations both nationally and at Stuyvesant. Our emphasis on public-speaking, self-expression and confidence isn't only aimed at training national competitors and finalists; it's aimed at training future leaders. This team represents a second family for every single one of us.

NOVICES -- Next Week's Congress Meetings

Hi everyone,

We'll be holding two meetings next week. Please add them to your calendars.

Tuesday -- Round Structure

We'll talk about what actually happens in a Congress round and what your role is.

Thursday -- Practice Speeches

On Tuesday, we'll either distribute or email a practice piece of legislation. You will prepare a 3 minute speech/case on it (either AFF or NEG). On Thursday, we'll break off into small groups and do mini-sessions. We'll give you guys (hopefully) useful advice.

Saturday!! -- Our first local tournament. Please don't be intimidated by this. I know you haven't had much training, but neither have the other categories or the other schools. Every other team in the city will be sending their first-time competitors as well, and these tournaments are generally friendly environments. I guarantee you there is no better way to learn than to participate. Please sign up here.

Quick note: I'm working on getting exclusive videos from the NFL (National Forensic League) Competition that was held this past June. Sometime soon, we'll have a video session in which you'll get to see the top performers in the nation. It's a phenomenal way to learn. We might even get you guys popcorn if you come on Tuesday and Thursday ;)

Below I am reattaching the two documents I suggested for reading. Please don't consider this busy work. It's simply a step towards understanding this category and the skills you'll work on perfecting before you get to the intense/fun parts. All of this will be explained, but it's good to get a head start.
