Stuyvesant Speech & Debate

2017- 2018

We represent one of the most honorable organizations both nationally and at Stuyvesant. Our emphasis on public-speaking, self-expression and confidence isn't only aimed at training national competitors and finalists; it's aimed at training future leaders. This team represents a second family for every single one of us.

All categories of debate require several essential skills. Debaters learn to research effectively, speak persuasively and think spontaneously in round. Arguments often reach incredible depth and detail. Being on the debate team offers anyone the chance to develop intellectually and become an astute and effective communicator.

Congressional Debate:

Congressional Debate (Student Congress) acquaints participants with the nuances of a fully functional U.S. Congress. In Congressional Debate, competitors give 3-minute structured speeches and are required to actively respond and participate in the round.

Public Forum:

Public Forum is a two vs two form of debate focusing on current events issues.  Topics are generally one month long.

Lincoln & Douglas:

Lincoln & Douglas Debate is a 1 on 1 form of debate focusing on moral philosophy and ethics. Topics are generally 2 months long.

Policy Debate:

Policy Debate is a two vs two form of debate focusing on policy-making argumentation. There is 1 topic per year, allowing for very in-depth research.

Parliamentary Debate:

Parliamentary debate is a highly interactive two-on-two form of debate where anything can be a topic. Topics are given only fifteen minutes before a round starts.
