Stuyvesant Speech & Debate

2016 - 2017

We represent one of the most honorable organizations both nationally and at Stuyvesant. Our emphasis on public-speaking, self-expression and confidence isn't only aimed at training national competitors and finalists; it's aimed at training future leaders. This team represents a second family for every single one of us.

Having qualified more than a dozen competitors for the NCFL Grand National Tournament, the Stuyvesant High School Speech and Debate team is at the height of yet another successful season. Our hard work and unyielding determination earned us a 1st place victory this year at both the 2014 Columbia Invitational and the 2013 Villiger Invitational—two major national tournaments. We also achieved remarkable results at other important competitions such as the Harvard Invitational,  the Blake Invitational, and the GMU Patriot Games.

This success has been long established. With a history spanning more than a quarter of a century, the Speech and Debate Team is one of Stuyvesant’s most popular and intellectually rigorous activities. Many prominent Stuyvesant alumni, including politicians, lawyers, journalists, actors, and academics, are former members of our Speech and Debate team. This is a result of the nature of this activity—it fosters critical thinking and develops oratorical and argumentative skills.  It also exposes our members to a high-achieving, yet tightly-knit and supportive, community in which lifelong friendships are made.

However, we need your help to ensure that our team continues to succeed in fulfilling its mission.

This spring, team members are asking family members, relatives, and friends to contribute to our team so that we can guarantee that this formative activity will continue to thrive despite economic hardships. With over 150 active members and a strong presence at renowned national competitions, the team bears huge costs to sustain itself.

Team members have to pay over $900 each year to cover travel, coaching, and tournament fees. And our expenses are rising — with hotel, transportation and registration fees increasing —  as funds are becoming less available. Forty percent of our team now qualifies for subsidized school lunch and for such students, the costs are waived or reduced. As a result, our team is struggling with a serious funding shortfall. This has led us to incur great debt in our attempts to preserve opportunities for every qualified competitor.

To make sure that all of our students—regardless of their income or socioeconomic class—can continue to enjoy full participation, please consider making a donation to our team. A donation form is attached. All contributions are made through the Stuyvesant High School Alumni Association. They are tax deductible and eligible for corporate matching if your company has such a program. (In addition, if you know of a company that might be interested in becoming a team sponsor, with larger ongoing financial support, please let us know!)

No amount is too small. Your support means a lot to us.

Many thanks,

The Stuyvesant Speech and Debate Team
