Stuyvesant Speech & Debate

2017- 2018

We represent one of the most honorable organizations both nationally and at Stuyvesant. Our emphasis on public-speaking, self-expression and confidence isn't only aimed at training national competitors and finalists; it's aimed at training future leaders. This team represents a second family for every single one of us.

2015 Parent Information

From Julie Sheinman, Director of Forensics in 2015:

To the New and Returning Members of the Speech and Debate Family,

Thank you all for coming to the kickoff meeting.  It was very touching to see so many of you.

I hope you were able to get a better understanding of our team – what it offers to your children and what you can do to help us.

I would like to clarify the issue of fees/donation/and bank account.  I received several emails inquiring about the procedure.

  1. Every member of the team must pay a $250 coaching fee.  These funds are used exclusively to pay the coaches of the various events and for the administration of the team.
  2. Each member of the team will make a deposit to his/her “account” which will cover the cost of individual travel.
  3. The team is asking parents, friends, grandparents…to donate to a general team fund which will allow us to have a reserve for attending national tournaments, TOC’s,  assisting team members who may face financial challenges who may be unable to afford travel

Please read the following payment instructions carefully. This year, we are offering both a check-based and online payment method.

If you'd like to send us a check, please make it out to the Stuyvesant High School Alumni Association. In the memo, please write your child's name, next to your child's name, write: (S&D), and specify whether your payment is for your child's account or a general team donation. If you are doing both (payment for your child's account AND a team donation), please give us two separate checks. They can be brought in by your child to room 627.

Please click on THIS link for an online payment method. It will take you to one of the Stuyvesant High School Alumni Association's pages. The first donation box is reserved for Speech & Debate contributions/payments. Once you enter an amount, please click on "Add to Cart." Then, click on "Go to Checkout," and once you confirm your amount, click "Pay Now."

Thank you once again for your time and support. Please do not hesitate to email us at with any questions.

We will be offering 2 payment options for members of the team.  Please select the one that works best for your family. These are contributions either to the team, or for your child's individual expenses.

Option 1: Parents/Guardians will make out a check to the Stuyvesant High School

Alumni Association for $900.  This amount will cover your child for a full year of competition and is fully tax deductible.

Option 2: Parents/Guardians will make out a check to the Alumni Association for $250, which is tax deductible.

This covers all operating fees for the team.

Additionally, families under this plan will use a "pay as you go" system.  That is, you will send a check made out to the Stuyvesant HS Student Union for any amount up to $650. This will be your child's "Bank Account."  These funds are not tax deductible, because the funds will be used directly for your child.  The expenses of tournaments will be deducted when your child competes. Parents who opt for this plan may deposit increments of $150 as needed.

The debate season has already started, and we need funds before we can map out our tournament schedule for this year.  Please fill out the donation form so that we can help your child compete as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Zachary Lemonides, Team Manager.
